The cowhorn handlebar, firmly soldered into the fork, was the hallmark of the early Mikael Pedersen wheels. After the bikes were manufactured by the D-P Cycle Company in 1899, Mikael Pedersen developed the adjustable handlebar, which sits on top of the fork. The D-P´s convinced with highest quality and their richness of detail. The floating, hanging, woven saddle - the trademark of every Dursley Pedersen - offered the finest seating comfort.
From 1905, when the Pedersens were produced by the Lister company, the bikes had 3-speed gears, full chain protection, handlebar brakes as rollover protection, double rim brakes with rods and brake cables running completely in the handlebars. In addition to the normally nickel-plated blank parts, the frame of the D-P was also nickel-plated under the paint. A Pedersen was developed carefully to the end - but also really expensive!
Many (long-distance) records were broken or established with D-P´s at the beginning of the 20th century. The Pedersen was not only a comfortable upright bike: it was also offered as a production racer and equipped with fixed racing handlebars, expensive tyres and light wooden rims.
In recent years, original D-P´s have developed into high-priced design icons. Even if friends and collectors complain about these spectacular bikes, the situation is the same as it was 120 years ago, when the Pedersen bike was only affordable for the wealthiest gentlemen.
